Coffee brewing has come a long way from the traditional drip and French press methods, and one method that has gained popularity in recent years is the AeroPress.

Invented in 2005 by Alan Adler, a retired Stanford University engineer, the AeroPress espresso brewing technique has become the preferred method among many coffee enthusiasts due to its ability to produce a clean, flavorful cup of coffee in a short amount of time.

What is the World AeroPress Championship?

The World AeroPress Championship is an annual competition that first started in 2008.

Celebrating the popularity of the AeroPress brewing method, baristas, and coffee enthusiasts from around take part in this competition.

Participants are judged based on the quality, taste, and presentation of their coffee, with the winner getting the title of AeroPress Champion.

Now with that history lesson, let us jump to the fun part. I know you all are here to know about the 2022 AeroPress Championship and the winning recipe.

An Overview of the 2022 World AeroPress Championship

The 2022 World AeroPress Championship was a testament to the talent and dedication of baristas from all over the globe.

It highlighted the importance of the AeroPress brewing method and the role of competition in promoting creativity and innovation in the coffee industry.

As the competition progressed, the number of champions decreased from 41 to only nine semi-finalists. It was an intense moment full of excitement.

Suddenly, the biggest twist in the event's fourteen-year history happened! The nine semi-finalists were brought onto the stage, introduced to the audience, and given a brand-new coffee. Tim, the host of the event, teased them by saying, "You only have forty minutes to dial it in. Sorry, not sorry." It was a surprising and challenging task for the remaining competitors.

During the final rounds of the competition, the atmosphere was electric with tension. It was so intense that you could almost cut it with a hockey stick! But after a nail-biting finish, it was Jibbi Little, who emerged as the ultimate winner. The crowd erupted in cheers and applause as she was awarded the coveted golden AeroPress. It was an incredible achievement for Jibbi, and the excitement was palpable in the air.

The Winning Recipe!

Now I will break down the Ingredients and techniques Behind the 2022 AeroPress Winning recipe.

For this recipe, Jibbi used the Inverted brewing orientation on the AeroPress with 18g of coffee dose. Use Perfect Coffee Water heated to 92°C and rinse one AeroPress Classic Filter before use. She recommends using two grinders, starting with a Timemore grinder at a very coarse setting and blowing out the silver skin. Then, use a Kinu grinder at setting 4 and sift out the fines at 100-200 microns.

The total brewing time for this recipe is 2 minutes and 10 seconds. Jibbi used Quietly Coffee x Cafe Imports Colombia Finca Juan Martin, Natural, Striped Red Bourbon.

  • She began by pouring the coffee into the chamber and adding 94 ml of water. Gently stir the mixture 35 times.
  • At 1 minute and 20 seconds, she screws on the cap and presses out any remaining air.
  • Flipping the AeroPress and press for 30 seconds from 1:40 to 2:10. Jibbi ended up with approximately 58-64g of coffee concentrate.
  • Next, she bypasses 90°C water to 150g and aims for a Total Dissolved Solids reading of 1.3 - 1.35.
  • The coffee tasted amazing at this strength and that is why it won the 2022 World AeroPress Championship!
